San Joao feast
Sao Joao is the feast of St. John the Baptist observed all over Goa on June 24. This feast is best enjoyed in monsoon's as the young and old engage in revelry all across Goa. The festive moods is seen in all south Goa villages, specially in places like Margao, Canacona, Paloliem and in the North of Goa its Morgim, Siolim and Keri. The Goans carry the local feni drink, which is strong and keeps the body warm in the heavy showers as the youth jump into the village wells to mark the festival.
The fest has always been celebrated on a grand scale and there are dance shows too organised on this day. A lavish feast of meat and seafood marks the end of the festival. The rainy season is a perfect season for the Sao Joao festival as most of the people enjoy it more when its raining heavily.
Ganesh Chaturthi
In August, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with a lot of pomp and gaiety all over Goa. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is strongly celebrated in Mapusa, Ponda, Pernem, Colvale and Bicholim.Marcela is the village where this festival is celebrated the most as it is a village known for its wide number of Hindu temples. The artisans from the village make many different idols of Lord Ganesh
The idols are made from Cane and Bamboo, the neighbouring Cumbharjua village the entire pandal and the idol is made of cane itself wherein the idol rests in a half lying posture on a swing, moving with help of a motor.
The locals and tourist visit places like Revora, Colvale which are famous for their idols and scenic backdrops, and the use of technology has been put to use lately to give a filip to the celebrations in Goa.
